Assemblage Art

Sunday, May 26th, 1-3pm

Class Description: In this fun art class you’ll arrange objects in a box to create a time capsule, turn mementos into art, and tell a story. Do you have a cigar box of treasures stashed in a closet or under your bed? If so, this class is for you! We’ll turn your collections of mementos and souvenirs into a work of art. Bring your own collections of mementos and a box you’d like to recycle and/or choose from provided supplies. For the time allotted for the class, I suggest a box no larger than a shoe box; however if you have a larger box you’d like to use and enough stuff to fill it, go ahead and bring it and if you don’t finish, you can always finish it at home. Good assemblage boxes I like using include: cigar boxes, iphone and computer boxes, candy and pie boxes, and IKEA boxes. There are so many great boxes to recycle for an assemblage so see what you have lying around. (If you have a wooden box you’d like to use and want to stain or paint it, I suggest doing that step before bringing it to the class so that it has time to dry.)

All Included: Small Boxes (Cigar Boxes are perfect but can be smaller or slightly larger), Paper, Charms, Buttons, Ribbon, Ephemera, Plastic Animals, Floral Miniatures (Birds, Butterflies, Plants, Flowers, Birdhouses, etc.), Moss, Aileens Tacky Glue, E600 Glue, Scissors, Xacto Knives and Blades, Cutting Mats, Paper Cutters, Spool of Fishing Line

Ages: 12 and up. Younger kids are welcome if accompanied by an adult. This is a great family activity so I encourage parents and kids to participate together.

Location: Meet us in the “Who Gives a Scrap” Classroom. Turn left when you enter the front door and head to the back of the Sales Floor.

Instructor: Elizabeth (aka “E”) recently moved to Colorado Springs from State College, PA, where she taught creative writing and composition courses at Penn State. With a BFA in Fashion Design from The University of North Texas and experience in sewing, jewelry designing, painting, drawing, collaging, journal and assemblage making, she is currently combining her art background with her passion for teaching, at Who Gives A Scrap. In her recent artistic endeavors, she utilizes upscaled & recycled materials, and encourages others to make creative use of what’s around us and seek out supplies/mediums at second-hand stores. E is also a published fiction writer and National Park enthusiast who enjoys hiking, backpacking and river rafting.
